Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican victory over the French at the baddle of Puebla on May 5 1862. It's often confused with the Mexican Independence Day, which occurred on Sept 16 1810.
MEXICO'S VICTORY AT THE BATTLE OF PUEBLA IS HISTORICALLY SIGNIFICANT
General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin led his people to victory in the battle of Puebla, even though his troops had fewer men and less equipment. It was in important victory for Mexico's fight for independence....but Mexico didn't end up winning and fell to French rule for several years.
CINCO DE MAYO WAS POPULARIZED IN THE USA IN MID 1900
Cinco de Mayo gain popularity through Chicano Activists in the 60' and 70', who identified with the Mexican Indian and mestizo soldiers' triumph over European conquest attempts. Also, we could thank President Franklin D Roosevelt's Good Neighbor Policy that was enacted in 1933. This act of "good neighbor" helped improve the relationship between American and Latin American countries.
